Ladies and Gentlemen

I think I'm in love...

with Puzzle quilting.
This is the puzzle edge to edge pattern in Christina Cameli's book, First Steps to Free Motion Quilting.  I have wanted to try it since I first opened the book last year, but I was scared.. (why does FMQ frighten me so?!)  I had to wait for a project small enough to be manageable and to not care if I didn't get it right the first time.  I tried it on a mini quilt last week, and yesterday I tackled these string pillows.  And I'm not kidding when I say I am in LOVE with this pattern.

Once you get into a rhythm it is such a comfortable movement and so satisfying.  Each little dip or blip just has it's own curved wonderfulness.  The intersecting lines at the corners of each puzzle piece make me almost giddy.  I think you have to be a quilter to understand.

Anyway, I think this is my new default quilt pattern.  I just need to test it out on something big..
Have you tried anything new that completely excites you?  Please share~

  1. I have yet to join the ranks of ladies who enjoy FMQ. I can do a splendid sample but when I try to quilt a full size quilt it all goes wrong.
I have the gloves, the foot, watched Youtube, but still cannot make the quilt move freely under the needle.
I do like this pattern tho. Maybe I should try again...

  2. Very cool! I can see how it would work well on a large quilt. You could reposition your hands at the squiggles. Thanks!

  4. I saw this quilting at a show quite a few years back. I loved the way it looked. I sat and doodled it lots! I've never tried it but I have pieces that don't matter to me that I've been practicing FMQ on. You've inspired me. I'm going to try it!

  5. I may try this ony next quilt. Good idea! It's a bit more controlled than just squiggles, basically you are making lines that look like squares, when you make the perpendicular one, with just the little bump out or in, on each one.

  9. I am so happy to hear you using words like "comfortable" "wonderfulness" and "giddy" when you talk about FMQ! You have turned the corner, it's wonderful. Your stitches look amazingly smooth and consistent, definitely stay with the FMQ you have the touch! XOX
